Friends and scoreboard

With friends you can keep up with what the people you fish with are catching, and compete with them. Feed at the bottom of the app has three parts: the public Feed, what your Friends have done, and the Scoreboard.

The friend list itself, the requests and the search for new friends are on the Friends page. You can find it in two places: under Profile, at the top of the list of your things, and on the person icon at the top right of the Feed tab. Both lead to the same page.

Adding a friend

  1. Go to Profile → Friends.
  2. Type your friend's full username in the Add friend field. While the app is searching, a small spinner turns on the right of the field.
  3. Send a friend request.
  4. When the other person accepts, you are friends.

Friendship is mutual: both of you have to say yes. Requests you have sent are listed under Awaiting reply until the other person has answered, and you can also withdraw them there. Requests to you are listed under Requests, where you choose Accept or Decline.

You can also add a friend from their profile. The Add friend button is in the profile card, right under the name.

NOTE

Friend requests use the exact username. This means you can become friends with someone even if their profile is private, as long as you know their username. This is deliberate, so that private users can still have friends without showing up in open searches.

NOTE

If the person you are looking for has turned off Friends and public feed under Privacy and sharing, the search gives no results, even if you type the username exactly right. See When the social features are off.

Removing a friend

Open your friend's profile and tap the three dots at the top right. That is where you find Remove friend, together with Block.

Notifications about friend requests

You get a notification on your phone when someone sends you a friend request, and when someone accepts yours. If you tap the notification, the app opens the request straight away. The notification is also saved in the notification log, so you can find it again even if you swiped it away.

If something new has arrived, a small red dot lights up on Feed at the bottom of the app. The dot goes out once you have visited the tab, and only comes back when a new request arrives. The number waiting is shown both on the person icon at the top right of the Feed tab and on the Friends row under Profile.

The first time you open Feed, the app asks for permission to send notifications. If you say no, everything else works as before, but then you have to visit the tab yourself to see if anything new has arrived. The badge in the menu bar appears regardless, it does not need notification permission.

NOTE

The app only asks once. If you change your mind, turn on notifications for MinFangst in your phone's own settings.

You never get notifications about activity in the feed. Apart from friend requests, you only get a notification if we make a decision about one of your own posts, see moderation.

The friends feed

The middle segment of the Feed tab is called Friends. There you see the catches, observations and new species your friends have logged, and your own. Fishing sessions are never shared, and anything you have marked as private is kept out.

At the top you choose what you want to see: Catches, Observations, New species or All. The feed starts on catches, and the choice you make stays until you choose something else, including the next time you open the app.

If you tap a name in the feed, you open that person's profile. If you tap your own name, you go to your own profile, where you can change your photo and the text about yourself.

The feed is fetched from the internet, so it needs a connection.

Public feed

The first segment of the Feed tab is called Feed. It contains catches that other users have chosen to post themselves, not just your friends. The feed is purely chronological: the newest post is at the top, and nothing is ranked by how many hearts it has received.

Only catches with a photo can be posted, and nothing ends up there by itself. You post one catch at a time, in three ways:

  • Post a catch at the top of the feed. You then get a list of your own catches that have a photo and are not already posted.
  • Post to the public feed inside a catch you open from the journal.
  • The switch Add to the public feed in the form when you log a catch. The switch is gray until the catch has a photo.

Before anything is posted, you see exactly what the post will look like. There you choose whether the lake and the weight and length are shown on the post. The photo, the species, the date and your username are always shown, while the note, the bait, the time of day, the weather and the fishing session behind the catch are never included. The exact point is never shared in the public feed, not even if you share it with your friends.

You can post a catch you have marked private. The app then tells you clearly that the photo and the species will be visible to everyone who uses MinFangst, so you see it before you confirm.

The catches you have posted are also shown on your profile, under the heading "Posts from" and your username.

If you want to take the post down again, open the catch and choose Remove from the public feed. The post is deleted for good together with the hearts it has received, and the catch stays in your journal as before.

NOTE

If you have turned off the social features under Privacy and sharing, the feed does not exist for you, neither other people's posts nor your own.

Hearts in the feed

You can give a heart to the catches, observations and new species your friends share, and to the catches in the public feed. One tap on the heart at the bottom of the card, and one more to undo it. Your own entries are also in the feed, but there is no button on them: you don't like your own things.

Your own cards show how many hearts you have received, and if you tap the number, a list of who gave them appears. The names are listed with the newest at the top, and if you tap a name, you open that person's profile.

In the friends feed, everyone who can give a heart to something of yours is a confirmed friend, so the list shows nobody you do not already know. If you have posted a catch in the public feed, the hearts can come from anyone, and then the list will contain usernames you do not know.

You can only see the list on your own entries: on a friend's card, the hearts may come from their friends, who are not necessarily yours.

The list is fetched from the internet when you open it, so it needs a connection. The number on the card is shown regardless.

Reporting a post

This applies to both the friends feed and the public feed. If there is something you think does not belong there, tap the three dots on the card and choose Report post. You say what is wrong, for example an inappropriate photo, harassment or spam, and can write a few words about why.

The report only goes to us. The post does not disappear for you right away, the friendship remains, and the person you report is not told anything. We handle reports within a day, and if we find that the post breaks the terms, we hide it for everyone who sees the feed.

If you simply do not want to see anything from a particular person, blocking is the way to go, and it is in the same menu. You can also find it on that person's profile, behind the three dots at the top right, together with Remove friend. Then neither of you sees the other, not in the feed, in search or as a friend request, and any friendship is ended. You can lift the block yourself under Profile → Privacy and sharing → Blocked users.

How we handle a post that is reported is described under moderation.

Scoreboard

The last segment of the Feed tab is the Scoreboard. There you and your friends are on a shared board, ranked from best to worst, with medals for the top three.

The Period and metric button lets you choose what you compete on:

  • Period: This week, This month, This year or All time. The board starts on "This year".
  • Metric: number of catches, number of species, longest fish or heaviest fish.

Reset puts the board back to the default choice. If you have no friends yet, only you are on it, so go ahead and add some.

The board is calculated only from what you have actually shared with your friends. A catch you have marked private counts neither in the number nor as longest or heaviest fish. Exact GPS points are never shared, not on the scoreboard either.

The standings are calculated on the server, so the scoreboard needs a connection.

The species fishing scoreboard is something else: a shared board for everyone who has joined, whether or not you are friends.

When the social features are off

Under Profile → Privacy and sharing you can turn off Friends and public feed. MinFangst is then a purely private fishing log. The Feed tab disappears from the menu at the bottom, Friends is no longer in the list under Profile, and you are outside the social side as seen by others too: your username gives no results when someone searches for a friend, your profile and profile photo cannot be opened, you do not appear in your friends' friend lists or on their scoreboard, and nobody can send you a friend request.

You also disappear from the species fishing scoreboard, and it is hidden for you.

The friendships you already have are kept. If you turn the social features back on, everything is as before.

Tips

  • Agree on a period or a metric to compete on, for example most species this year, and the board becomes more fun.
  • If you want to show off a fine fish to more people than your friends, post it in the public feed.
