Species fishing

Species fishing is for anglers chasing as many species as possible. You find it under Profile → Species fishing. The page has two parts: My species, the species you have confirmed, and Scoreboard, where you can compete with other species anglers.

What is a confirmed species?

A species is confirmed when you have at least one catch of it that has all of this:

  • Time: the date and time of the catch. It gets this automatically.
  • Place: a lake, a river, a sea area or a fishing spot of your own. It is enough for the place to be set on the fishing session the catch belongs to, and an exact GPS point is not needed.
  • Species: chosen from the species list.
  • Photo: a photo of the fish.

Older catches that meet the requirements count too, so the list fills up as soon as you open it. Brown trout and sea trout count as one species, and so do Arctic charr and sea-run Arctic charr (see Brown trout and Arctic charr in saltwater).

The requirements are stricter than elsewhere in the app because the scoreboard has to be fair. The species fishing list is therefore separate from your species collection in the journal, which shows every species you have logged, without any requirements.

My species

This shows the species you have confirmed, in alphabetical order. Each species is shown with your photo of the first catch that meets the requirements, along with the date and place. That is the catch that counts for the species. Tap a species to open the catch.

The info button in the top right shows the requirements for a confirmed species.

The Log a species button opens the usual form for a new catch, with a reminder at the top of what it needs. When you save, you come back to species fishing. This is not the same as Add → Add species, which only adds a species to your collection without a catch (see Adding a species manually).

“Waiting for the photo to upload”

A species only counts on the scoreboard once its photo is with us. If it has not been uploaded yet, for example because you caught the fish without coverage, the species is listed with the label Waiting for the photo to upload. This sorts itself out the next time your phone is online and syncs.

Scoreboard

The scoreboard is a shared board for everyone who has joined, ranked by the number of confirmed species. The top three get a medal. If two people have the same number of species, they share the place, and the one who reached it first is listed higher.

Others only see your username, your profile picture and how many species you have. They do not see which species they are, the photos or where you have fished. Your profile picture follows the same rules as elsewhere: with a private profile, only your friends see it.

The board is worked out on the server, so it needs coverage.

Joining the scoreboard

The scoreboard is off by default. If you are not on it, there is a message at the top of Scoreboard. Tapping it takes you to Profile → Privacy and sharing, where the Show me on the species fishing scoreboard switch is highlighted so you find it straight away. You can leave again there whenever you like.

You can be on the scoreboard even if your profile is private.

All your catches that meet the requirements count, including the ones you have marked Private. Others still only see the number. Read more under Privacy and security.

When the social features are off

If you have turned off the social features, the scoreboard is hidden, and you are not on the board for anyone else. My species works as usual, and at the top there is a button that takes you straight to the switch for the social features. Your choice is remembered, so if you turn the social features back on, you are on the scoreboard as before.

Checks against cheating

To keep the board fair, we may look at the photos behind the species of everyone on the scoreboard. If we do not accept a photo, for example because it shows a different species from the one logged, that catch does not count in species fishing. The catch itself is not changed and stays in your journal as before. If you have another catch of the same species that meets the requirements, the species still counts.

For repeated cheating, we can remove you from the scoreboard. Your species list works as before; it is only the board you are not on.

You will always get a notification with our reasons, and the case appears under Profile → Privacy and sharing → Decisions about your content, where you can appeal. See Moderation of what you share.
