Settings and account
You find the settings under Profile → Settings, or on the gear icon at the top right of the Profile page. This is where you manage your account and how the app behaves.
The page is divided into the sections Account, App, Appearance, Notifications, Sync and Account management.
Language
The app can be shown in Norwegian, Swedish and English. Change the language by tapping the flag under Settings → App → Language. Before you have signed in, you can also change the language with the flags at the top right of the sign-in page.
The app chooses the language automatically from your phone's language the first time you open it. If your phone is set to Norwegian, the app is in Norwegian, and if it is set to Swedish, the app is in Swedish. If your phone has any other language, for example Polish or German, the app starts in English. If you choose a language yourself, the app remembers your choice and ignores what the phone is set to.
The fish species follow the language choice. With the app in Swedish, the European perch is called "Abborre" and its family "Abborrfiskar", and you search for it in Swedish. You can also find it by its Norwegian name and by its scientific name, so you do not need to know what the fish is called in both languages. A few rare deep sea species have no Swedish or English name, and they are shown in Norwegian.
Place names are shown with the name the place actually has, whatever language you choose. A lake is called the same in Sweden as in Norway.
Messages that come from the server also follow the language choice: messages when something goes wrong, the notification you get when someone sends you a friend request, and the email with a code for a new password. If a text is missing in Swedish, it is shown in English.
Appearance
Under Settings → Appearance → Theme you choose how the app should look:
- Light gives light surfaces and dark text.
- Dark gives dark surfaces, which is easy on the eyes in the evening and at night.
- System follows your phone, and switches between light and dark when your phone does.
Sync
Under Settings → Sync you can turn on Upload photos on Wi-Fi only. The app then waits to upload your photos until the phone is on a wireless network, so you save mobile data when you are out. The rest of the journal is synced as before. Read more about sync under Sync, backup and export.
Notification log
All the notifications you get from the app are collected under Profile → Notifications. That is where you find friend requests, the alerts about conditions at your favorite places, the reminders about an ongoing fishing session and messages from us about your content, with the time and the newest first.
The log is there because a notification on your phone is gone the moment you swipe it away, and if your phone was switched off when it arrived, you never saw it. If something new has arrived, a red dot lights up on Profile at the bottom of the screen, and the number is shown on the row itself. Everything is marked as read when you open the list, but the dots next to each notification stay until next time, so you can see what was new.
If you tap a notification on the lock screen, it stays in the log in the same way as the others. The app counts it as read, since you have just read it, so no dot lights up for it, but you can read the message itself again whenever you like.
The notifications in the log take you to what they are about. A friend request opens the requests, an alert about conditions opens the fishing forecast for the place it was about (or the measuring station on the map, if the alert was about a station), a message from us about your content opens the case, and the reminder about an ongoing session opens the session itself. It is the same place you get to if you tap the notification on the lock screen. An arrow on the right of the row shows which notifications lead somewhere. Those without an arrow are just for reading.
You can tidy up the log. Swipe a notification to the left to bring up a red delete button, or tap Clear all above the list to empty it. Deleting notifications has no effect on the notifications you get in future.
What you get notifications about is controlled under Notifications further down this page.
Notifications
Under Settings → Notifications you control Reminder about an open session. It is on from the start, and makes your phone remind you if you have a fishing session running and have not opened the app for an hour. Read more under Ending an ongoing session.
Under Alerts about conditions you choose whether the app should let you know when something changes at your favorite places. The alerts are part of Premium. Without premium you can still choose what you want alerts about, and we start sending them once you have premium.
You can get four kinds of alert, and each of them can be turned on and off separately:
| Alert | When it arrives |
|---|---|
| Water flow and water level | When the river drops or rises sharply, or when there is unusually little water. |
| Water temperature | When the water passes a new mark in spring, for example the twelve degrees where fishing often picks up. |
| Bite window tomorrow | The evening before, when the fishing forecast for the next day is good. |
| Weather worth a trip | When a calm morning without rain is forecast, or when the air pressure drops sharply during the night. |
You do not need to set any figures. What counts as high, low and a big change is calculated from the measurements at each individual place, so the same alert works just as well in a small mountain stream as in a large river. This also applies in Sweden: if your favorite station is Swedish, the normal level is calculated from the measurement series of SMHI (the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) in the same way as from those of NVE (the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) in Norway.
The alerts follow the favorite places you have marked on the map. If you have no favorites, the app has nothing to keep an eye on, and then no alerts arrive either. Alerts are only sent between 07:00 and 22:00, and the same alert is not repeated from day to day. The bite window message is calculated on your phone, so it also arrives when you are without coverage. If you tap it, the app opens the fishing forecast for the place the message was about, so you go straight to the hours it told you about.
The notification about friend requests is not controlled here: it follows the permission you gave the app, and can be turned off for MinFangst in your phone's settings.
Your email address
At the top under Settings → Account are your profile photo, your username and the email address the account uses. If you tap the photo, you can change or remove it, see Profile photo.
Did you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your address?
Then Apple has created a separate forwarding address for MinFangst, which looks like a string of random letters and numbers. We never see your real address, and our emails go to Apple, which forwards them to you. Everything works as it should, and in the app it says "You chose to hide your email address when you signed in with Apple." instead of the address, so you do not have to wonder where it came from. A similar message, "Email address hidden by Apple", is shown under your name at the top of the Profile page.
If you would rather have emails go straight to your own inbox, you can register your address yourself:
- Go to Settings → Account and tap Register your own email address.
- Enter the address you use. If your account has a password, enter that too, since the email address is your username when you sign in with a password.
- We send a code to the new address. Enter the code in the app, and the change is done.
The code is valid for fifteen minutes, and the address on the account stays the same until you have entered it. You sign in with Apple just as before, and we send a message to the old address saying the address was changed, so you find out about it if it was not you who did it.
Changing your password
- Go to Settings → Account management → Change password.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter the new password.
- Save.
Forgotten the old password? Sign out and use Forgot your password? on the sign-in screen instead, see Getting started.
Did you create your account with Apple or Google?
Then your account has no password, and the row is called Set password instead. You go straight to the new password, without entering a current one. If you set a password, you get an extra way in: you can sign in with email and password in addition to the button you use today, and you can use the password to confirm when you want to delete your account. Signing in with Apple or Google keeps working as before.
Signing out
You sign out with Sign out at the bottom of the Profile page. Your entries are then removed from the phone, but everything that has been synced is safe in your account and comes back the next time you sign in.
TIP
If you have been without coverage for a while, tap Sync now right under Sign out before you sign out. Then you can be sure that everything has been sent up.
Exporting your journal
If you have Premium, Export data (CSV) is under Settings → Account management. There you download your whole journal as a spreadsheet. Read more under Sync, backup and export.
Deleting your account
If you want to leave, you can delete your account under Settings → Account management → Delete account. Your account and all your journal data are then removed from the server.
The deletion must be confirmed, so that nobody else can do it on your behalf. If the account has a password, you enter the password. If you sign in with Apple or Google, you confirm by signing in there one last time. If you have an Apple account and use Android, that sign-in is not available on your phone, and you then have to set a password first and confirm with it.
WARNING
Deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone. Consider exporting your journal first if you want to keep your data.
If you have an active Premium subscription, you should also cancel it through the App Store or Google Play, since the subscription itself is managed there.
Privacy
The choices about what you share, and how your data is handled, are under Profile → Privacy and sharing in the app. Read more on the page Privacy and security.
