Fishing sessions
A fishing session is a whole fishing trip. While a catch is a single fish, a session gathers everything that happened on the trip: the place, the time span and the catches you made.
The sessions are in the Journal, which is the first thing you see when you open the app. The journal shows everything you have entered in one place, and the row of choices at the top lets you see just one thing at a time: All, Sessions, Catches, Fish species and Observations. Tap Sessions to see only the sessions.
Finding sessions again
The session list shows the current year by default. Above the list you will find a search field and a filter button:
- Search matches the place, the municipality and the note. You can search with several words at once, for example "tyrifjorden pike".
- Filter and sorting lets you choose a period (this year, last year, the last 30 days or everything), show only sessions with or without a catch, and sort the list (newest first, oldest first, most fish, most species or longest session).
An orange dot on the filter button shows that a filter is active. Reset puts everything back to the default. A session in progress is always shown at the top, whatever the filter.
The filter you choose stays in place while you use the app. If you open a session and go back, or visit the map or the feed and come back to the journal, the list is just as you left it. If you close the app completely, the journal starts on the default filter again.
Starting a new session
- Tap Add and choose New fishing session.
- Choose the place under Where did you fish?
- Choose how you want to save the session:
- Start session in progress is for a trip you are on right now. The session stays open without an end time and is saved automatically while you fish.
- Save finished session is for a trip that is already over. You then fill in the time span yourself with Add end time.
- Log the catches you make along the way.
You do not need to fill in everything in advance. Many people start a session in progress when they arrive, and add catches as they land the fish.
Below the place you can also set an exact point for the session. On a saved session you will find the buttons Show on map and Correct position, where you can see the session on the map or move the point to where you actually stood.
NOTE
You can have one session in progress at a time. If there is already an open session, you end it before you start a new one.
Autosave
While you are working on a session in progress, the app saves your changes automatically. At the top you will see a small status line that tells you when the session was last saved, and that it is safe to close the app. So you can lock your phone, lose coverage or be interrupted without losing anything you have entered.
TIP
Autosave is made for use in the field. You do not need to look for a save button in the middle of fishing. Just carry on, and the app takes care of it.
Adding catches to a session
Inside a session you can log your catches in two ways, which suit different situations:
- Species and count is quick logging, and it is what most sessions consist of. For each species you increase or decrease the number with plus and minus. It suits the times when the fish are biting well and you just want to keep count. This section is always open at the top.
- Special catch is a single fish in detail. It is folded up below, with the number in the heading, and you tap anywhere on the row to open it. Tap Add special catch to log one fish with species, weight, length, bait and photo. The place is taken from the session, so you only fill in what concerns the fish itself. Each special catch can be opened, edited and deleted on its own, and you can add as many as you like.
Both count in the session's totals, but the same fish is only counted once. If you enter Trout 1 under Species and count and add a special catch of trout, it is still the one trout you caught, and the session shows one fish. If you have Perch 5 and Trout 2 and add details for one of the trout, the trip stands at seven fish. If you add a special catch of a species you have not entered under Species and count, it counts as one more fish.
If you have already logged a separate catch that belongs to the trip, open the session and tap Link an existing catch. The catch is then moved to the session's place.
NOTE
You do not need to save the session first. If you have chosen a place or added a species, the app saves the session by itself when you add the fish, so that the fish has something to belong to. If you have not set an end time, it is started as a session in progress, since the trip is clearly still going on. If you have set an end, it is saved as a finished session. Afterwards you come straight back to the session.
Time and position on a special catch
The time is at the top of the form for a special catch. If the session is in progress, it is set to now. If you enter the fish after the trip is over, it starts at the session's start time, and you correct it to when the fish was actually caught. The time can also be corrected later.
If the time is outside the session, the form shows when the session started and ended, so you can check that the time is right. It is only a reminder, and you can save anyway if it is correct.
If you add a special catch while the session is in progress, and the app has access to your location, the fish gets the point where you are standing at that moment. This means that a fish caught in the middle of a boat trip ends up where you caught it, and not where the trip started. If you enter the fish afterwards, it gets the session's point.
When you correct the session
If you move the session's start time, the special catches move by the same amount. If you started at one o'clock, caught a fish at twenty past, and correct the start to two o'clock, the fish is at twenty past two. If the new time is not right, you can correct each catch on its own afterwards.
If you change the water on the session, the special catches follow along to the new water.
You can still log a catch entirely on its own, without a session. You then fill in the place and time yourself.
Observations in a session
Did you see fish without getting them on the hook? Open Observations in the session, tap Add observation and choose the species you saw. The observation takes the session's place and time, and is shown as "Seen, not caught" on the session's page. Read more under Observations.
The conditions on the trip
The app saves the weather, the water temperature and, where available, the tide, the water flow and the water level on the session. The figures are fetched for where you were fishing. If you have set an exact point, the water flow is fetched from the gauging station nearest your point, and the weather for exactly that place. If you fish in a salmon river, the tide is saved at the mouth of the river.
If you enter a trip afterwards, the weather is fetched from a weather history for the day and the hour the trip actually took place. If you correct the date or the water later, the conditions are fetched again, so a trip is never left with the weather from the wrong day. Older trips in the journal are filled in and corrected the first time you open them.
With Premium you can see the figures under Weather during the session and Water flow and water level. Without Premium there is a card called Conditions on this trip, which shows which readings are saved on that particular trip. The figures themselves are waiting for you the day you unlock them, also on old trips. The card is only there when the trip actually has something saved.
At the bottom of the session is Your statistics for the place: how many sessions and catches you have had there, and when you were there first and last.
Ending a session in progress
When the trip is over, open the session in progress and tap End and save session. The end time is set to now (you can adjust it), and the session is finished. It stays in the journal, where you can open it again at any time to see or edit it.
If the session was started by mistake, you can choose Discard session instead. The session and everything you have logged on it is then deleted.
Reminder if you forget
It is easy to put your phone away and forget that the session is still running. So if you have an open session and have not been into the app for an hour, your phone sends you a notification: "Still fishing?", together with how long the session has lasted. If you tap the notification, you go straight to the session and can end it.
The countdown starts again every time you visit the app, so you never get a notification while you have the app open. The notification comes from the phone itself and needs neither internet nor coverage. The reminder also stays under Profile → Notifications, where a tap opens the session. If you do not want the reminder, you turn it off under Settings → Notifications.
Editing or deleting a session
Open a session from the journal to:
- Edit fishing session, that is, change the place, the time or the catches.
- Delete fishing session, that is, remove the session. You will be asked to confirm first. The species in your collection stay.
Who can see the session?
The session itself is never shown to friends. It is in your own journal and only tells you where and for how long you were fishing.
At the bottom of the session form it says Who can see this?, with the same three levels as a catch. Friends is the default, and the content of the session is then shared in two ways: the species and the numbers you count go anonymously to the shared species data, in the same way as catches (the species, the named water and the time, never the exact position), and fish you enter under Observations as fish you only saw become observations your friends can see.
If you choose No place, your friends still see the species you saw, but not which water, and the session is kept out of the shared species data. If you choose Private, nothing is shared. Both choices apply to everything attached to the session: a catch or observation that was more open is tightened along with the session. The trip counts in your own statistics whatever you choose.
A special catch in the session has its own Who can see this?. It starts at the session's level, but you can make it stricter on its own.
If you want to control who can see your profile at all, use Private profile under Profile → Privacy and sharing.
