Getting started
This page takes you through your first few minutes with MinFangst, from downloading the app to logging your first catch.
Download the app
MinFangst is available for both iPhone and Android. Search for MinFangst in the App Store or Google Play, or follow the links on minfangst.no.
Create an account
The first time you open the app, you arrive at the sign-in screen. Tap Create account at the bottom. You can create your account in two ways.
With Apple or Google
Tap Continue with Apple or Continue with Google, and sign in the way you usually do with them. You do not need to create a separate password. Finally, choose a username and tap Finish signing up.
The Apple button is only available on iPhone. If you created your account with Apple on an iPhone and want to use it on an Android phone, set a password on the account first, see Settings and account.
With email
- Tap Continue with email.
- Choose a Username (3 to 30 characters: letters, numbers and underscore), fill in your Email and create a Password of at least 8 characters. Type the password once more to confirm it.
- Tick the box to confirm that you have read and accept the terms of use and the privacy policy.
- Tap Create account.
Your username is what other anglers see if you add friends or post catches in the feed, so choose something you are happy with. Your email address is used to sign in and to reset your password if you ever forget it.
Your first choices
NOTE
Right after signing up, you are asked to make two privacy choices: Private profile (off by default, so others can open your profile page) and Help map the fish species (on by default, so your catches contribute anonymously to the shared species data). Both can be switched with a single tap there, and changed later under Profile → Privacy and sharing.
At the bottom of the same screen, choose Take a tour of the app, which gives you a short tour pointing out the most important features, or Skip, start logging if you want to get going straight away.
Location and notifications
The next screen is called Set up the app and explains the two things the app asks permission for. Tap Allow next to the ones you want to turn on:
- Location. The app suggests the lake, river or sea area you are standing by, so you do not have to look it up yourself. This works without coverage, and your location is never shared with others. See Exact GPS point.
- Notifications. You are told when someone sends you a friend request, and when someone accepts yours. If you have forgotten a fishing session that is still open, the app reminds you about it.
Neither is required, and you can use the app fully without them. If you change your mind, turn on access for MinFangst in your phone's settings. Tap Get started (or Continue to the tour if you chose the tour) to enter the app.
If you already have an account, enter your email address and password on the sign-in screen and tap Sign in. If you created your account with Apple or Google, tap the same button as last time. The app remembers you until next time, so you do not have to sign in every time.
Forgot your password?
Tap Forgot your password? on the sign-in screen, enter your email address and tap Send code. You will receive a six-digit one-time code by email. Enter it in the app, choose a new password and tap Choose new password.
How the app is organized
At the bottom of the app you will find the main navigation:
| Place | What you do there |
|---|---|
| Journal | The front page. This is where your fishing sessions, catches, fish species and observations are, all together or one type at a time. |
| Feed | The public feed, what your friends share, and the scoreboard. |
| + (in the middle) | Add a new fishing session, catch, fish species or observation. |
| Map | See lakes, rivers and sea areas, your own catch spots and what others have reported. |
| Profile | Your profile, statistics, achievements, fishing forecast, species fishing, notifications, premium, settings, privacy and help. |
If you have turned off friends and the public feed under privacy, Statistics appears where Feed would otherwise be.
Your first catch
The quickest way to get to know the app is to log a catch:
- Tap + at the bottom in the middle, and choose New catch.
- Add a photo if you like, and choose the Species (for example brown trout). The species is the only thing you have to fill in.
- Fill in anything else you want: weight, length, place and bait.
- Tap Save catch.
That's all! Read on in Logging a catch for all the details, or jump to Fishing sessions to learn how to log a whole trip.
